‘Viespe’ Detachment reaches 500 flight hours at Fetesti Air Base

• The Detachment, under national operational control of the Operations Command, participates in the Alliance Air Shield on the eastern flank.

The 'Viespe' Detachment, deployed since December 1 in Romania, has reached 500 flight hours in its reinforced air police mission patrolling Romanian airspace and keeping aircraft on QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) for the interception and identification of aircraft entering the airspace without authorization.

The Detachment consists of 8 EF-18 fighters from the 15th Wing and 130 Air and Space Army personnel. They are deployed at the Borcea-Fetesti Air Base in Romania.

NATO's Air Shield mission, which has been in place for more than 60 years, is the Alliance's formula for deterring adversaries and mitigating any potential threat to member states.

Spain is providing this detachment in response to NATO's request to maintain and increase the allies' contribution to promoting security and stability in the region through deterrence and defense along the eastern flank
