EMAD Units

The General Staff Joint Command (EMACON in Spanish), as the sole auxiliary command body of the Chief of the Defence Staff (JEMAD in Spanish), will support the Minister of Defence with political-military advice and in military planning and leadership at the strategic level when acting within the Armed Forces Operational Command.

The Joint Operations Command (MOPS in Spanish) is the body for the operational structure, subordinated to the Chief of the Defence Staff (JEMAD in Spanish) and in charge of conducting the operational planning and management, together with the monitoring of the assigned operational plans and military operations. It is also responsible for planning and conducting those established joint and combined exercises. It is composed, on a permanent basis, by the Headquarters and Staff of the Operations Command, and it is organically incorporated into the Defence Staff.

 

 

The Centre for Advanced National Defence Studies (CESEDEN in Spanish) is the main joint military training centre of the Spanish Armed Forces. CESEDEN is responsible for providing courses in higher national defence studies, as well as carrying out tasks of research, promotion dissemination of the defence culture.

 

The Spanish Armed Forces Intelligence Centre (CIFAS in Spanish) is the body responsible of obtaining for the Ministry of Defence (through the Chief of Defence Staff) and for the military authorities, the military intelligence needed to warn about situations of military concern with potential risk of external crisis that affect national defence. It is also in charge of giving the needed support to operations within its scope.

The Joint Cyber-Defence Command (MCCD in Spanish) is the body of the operational structure, under the Chief of Defence Staff (JEMAD), responsible for planning and execution of actions relating to cyber defence in networks and information and telecommunications systems of the Ministry of Defence, or other ones that may be entrusted to it. It also contributes to an adequate response in the cyberspace against threats or aggressions that may affect National Defence.

 

 

In January 2013, the Spanish Chief of the Defence Staff (JEMAD in Spanish), approved, by Ministerial Order, the establishment of the Joint Special Operations Command (MCOE in Spanish), directly dependent on the Commander of the Operations Command (CMOPS in Spanish). From its creation on October 2014, it is established at Retamares Military Base in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid). MCOE has assumed all the tasks included in the Joint Special Operations.

The mission of the Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Centre of Excellence (COE C-IED) is to provide expertise and leadership in the fight against improvised explosive devices (C-IED) in order to reinforce the security of the Spanish and allied forces deployed in operations, and to contribute to the improvement of our security and that of our partner countries and allies, against the terrorist or insurgent threat.

UVE is the independent joint operational unit in charge of conducting verification activities corresponding to the Armed Forces.

The Maritime Security and Surveillance Command (in Spanish MVSM) is the body of the Armed Forces operational structure, directly subordinated to the Chief of Defence Staff, responsible for planning, conducting and monitoring surveillance and security operations in maritime areas of sovereignty, responsibility and national interest.

The Air Defence and Operations (in Spanish MDOA) is directly subordinated to the Defence Chief of Staff and operationally depends on the Operations Command.
