The Armed Forces participate in the National Public Protection System, which ensures the coordination, cohesion and effectiveness of public civil protection policies, which, as an instrument of public security policy, is the public service that protects people and property. It guarantees an adequate response to the different types of emergencies and catastrophes caused by natural causes or derived from human action, both accidental and intentional.
The Armed Forces (FAS), in relation to the prevention of forest wildfires, foresees a contribution of military resources articulated in levels of effort, linked to the severity of the situation at any given time.
In order to develop and specify the operational and economic aspects of the collaboration, the Ministry of Defense and the different autonomous communities collaborate with the Armed Forces for the prevention of forest wildfires, developing the appropriate action protocols.
Since 2007, the Armed Forces have been carrying out, among other actions, an operation to support government authorities, consisting of establishing an operational deployment of patrols and aerial surveillance resources to contribute to the prevention of forest wildfires in Galicia, known as the 'Centinela Gallego'.
To materialize this deployment, the Chief of Defence (JEMAD) defines the terms of the collaboration of the Armed Forces in the prevention of forest wildfires in Galicia.
The support of the Armed Forces to the 'Xunta de Galicia' shows the firm commitment both in support activities to civilian authorities and with the environment, action that has had, so far, a positive impact on activities aimed at preventing forest fires.
In 2024, the operation begins on 15 August and ends on 30 September.
In 2024, the operation begins on July 1, lasts until September 30, and consists of daily patrols whose main task is the surveillance and dissuasion of possible incendiary actions.
The patrols' surveillance and action zone is centered on the areas surrounding the natural protected forest areas, which are susceptible to wildfires on the 'Tenerife' Island.
During this activation, a maximum of ten land patrols per day will be deployed with the aim of providing 24-hour coverage of Tenerife's forests during the most critical months of July, August and September.
As in Galicia, in order to materialise this deployment, the Chief of Defence (JEMAD) defines the terms of the collaboration of the Armed Forces in fire prevention in Tenerife.
