The Armed Forces participate in the National Public Protection System, which ensures the coordination, cohesion and effectiveness of public civil protection policies, which, as an instrument of public security policy, is the public service that protects people and property. It guarantees an adequate response to the different types of emergencies and catastrophes caused by natural causes or derived from human action, both accidental and intentional.
The Armed Forces (FAS), in relation to the prevention of forest wildfires, foresees a contribution of military resources articulated in levels of effort, linked to the severity of the situation at any given time.
In order to develop and specify the operational and economic aspects of the collaboration, the Ministry of Defense and the different autonomous communities collaborate with the Armed Forces for the prevention of forest wildfires, developing the appropriate action protocols.
Since 2007, the Armed Forces have been carrying out, among other actions, an operation to support government authorities, consisting of establishing an operational deployment of patrols and aerial surveillance resources to contribute to the prevention of forest wildfires in Galicia, known as the 'Centinela Gallego'.
To materialize this deployment, the Chief of Defence (JEMAD) defines the terms of the collaboration of the Armed Forces in the prevention of forest wildfires in Galicia.
The support of the Armed Forces to the 'Xunta de Galicia' shows the firm commitment both in support activities to civilian authorities and with the environment, action that has had, so far, a positive impact on activities aimed at preventing forest fires.
In 2024, the operation begins on 15 August and ends on 30 September.
The operation began for the first time between July 1 and September 30, 2024, executing daily patrols with the main objective of preventing possible incendiary actions through surveillance and dissuasion.
The patrols surveillance is focused on the areas surrounding the forest protected natural areas, susceptible to fires on the island of Tenerife.
To carry out these actions, daily ground patrols and helicopters belonging to the Battalion of Maneuver Helicopters - BHELMA VI are deployed with the aim of providing 24/7 coverage to the forests of Tenerife in the most critical months such as July, August and September.
As in Galicia, in order to materialize this deployment, the Chief of Defense (ESP CHOD) defines the terms of the collaboration of the Armed Forces in the prevention of fires in Tenerife.
