  • The Spanish contribution to the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine provides optimal training of military personnel

Within the framework of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA) the number of 1,800 Ukrainian soldiers trained in different Spanish locations has been reached since the mission first started. Nowadays 116 Ukrainian soldiers are being trained in Spain through different specific courses.

By adapting to the requirements of the Ukrainian authorities, the military personnel is receiving training in critical skills such as mine clearance, combat medical assistance, CIED fight, geospatial support, close air support terminal guidance, tactical operations planning and training of leaders of small units such as squad.

In the Combat Training Unit, located in Toledo, the soldiers’ work with mechanised transport vehicles has been integrated as it is an in-demand training in the current front.

The training of the squad leaders is one of the critical skills required by Ukraine in order to facilitate the implementation of the counter-offensive at a tactical level. Spain counts with an extensive experience in non-commissioned officer training, from which the role of non-commissioned officer Squad Leader is its tenets. This task has been assigned to the 1st-63 Motorized Infantry Battalion Cataluña (BIMT I/63 in Spanish).

During this summer, this military personnel will continue with the training in Toledo, Almería, Cartagena, Alcantarilla, San Clemente de Sasebas and Madrid.

The first course of close air guidance of aircrafts has started this July, developed by the personnel of the Parachute Sapper Squadron of the Air and Space Forces, in Alcantarilla, Murcia. With this course, interpersonal skills in the combat front-line with aircrafts will improve.

During the month of August, training in geospatial techniques (cartography and land navigation) will be integrated to the skills list offered to military personnel. It will be carried out in the Army Geographic Centre.

Spain has joined the EUMAM UA to provide support and participate in the mission. An EU-flagged mission under operational control of the Operations Command at a national level and, as with all missions and operations, under the command of the Spanish Chief of Defence Staff.

In order to carry out the training activities in support of the skill of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC) has been founded. The TTCC has as the aim of achieving the training of rotations of near 400 Ukrainian soldiers every two months. For the development of these activities, a permanent training structure has been defined, namely the Combat Training Unit, which is able to provide both the basic training and other different specific training.
