· This is the last stopover of the frigate in support of Spanish diplomacy.
The frigate 'Méndez Núñez' has made a stopover in the city of Valparaíso (Chile) during its trip to commemorate the 5th Centenary of the first round-the-world tour of Magallanes and Elcano. Due to the state of emergency decreed in the country, the stopover has been reduced to meet the necessary institutional commitments and logistical activities.
The ship docked early in the morning of Friday, 25th October at the Valparaiso naval base, where the Spanish ambassador to this country, Enrique Ojeda Vila, was received according to Ordinance Honours and invited to visit the ship. Also, representatives of the Chilean Navy, including the Vice Admiral Commander of Naval Operations, visited the ship.
The frigate has already set sail for Balboa (Panama), where it will dock to allow its crew to exercise the right to vote for the next general elections. It will then cross the Panama Canal and the commemorative mission will be considered completed.
During its commemorative trip, the frigate 'Méndez Núñez' has visited 12 ports to strengthen bilateral relations as well as Spain's commitment to world maritime security, to support defence diplomacy and to commemorate the 5th Centenary of the beginning of the Spanish expedition.
