April 21, 2023
  • In order to unify methods, forces from UNIFIL East sector and the Lebanese Armed Forces have conducted a training exercise on crowd and riot control

Units from UNIFIL East and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have undergone a joint training on crowd and riot control, in compliance with the instructions of UNIFIL HQ and the approval of LAF HQ.

This training took place at the Spanish contingent's Miguel de Cervantes Military Base. On this occasion, the training was conducted by the Indonesian military police unit of Sector East (SEMPU).

The operative methods of the LAF and UNIFIL are quite different and, in order to carry out coordinated activities with the LAF, both parties must achieve training objectives.

The training consisted of theoretical and practical classes, which took place between April 18th and 20th. More than fifty military personnel from the different contingents of UNIFIL Sector East and ten military personnel from the LAF participated as trainees.

The most important activities were lectures on the factors that provoke demonstrations and the purpose of demonstration control, equipment, organisation, types of cordon and formations, movements and command and control. The lectures were followed by practical exercises. As a final test of the training, a comprehensive exercise was conducted in which three scenarios were simulated: urban riots, riots in front of entrance gates to facilities and riots on the road.

At the end of the training, a closing ceremony was held in which a diploma was awarded to the participants who had successfully completed the course.

This activity is part of the collaboration between UNIFIL and the LAF, with the aim of contributing to peace and stability in Lebanon.
