Lieutenant General Jose Antonio Agüero Martínez, National Military Representative for the NATO Mission in Iraq, has visited the Spanish contingent deployed in Iraq. He was accompanied by the Contingent Commander and the Force Commanders of Operation Iraq Support. He had the opportunity to tour the entire Area of Operations during the four days of his visit and to have contact with the Spanish units that contribute to the International Coalition for the defeat of DAESH and with the different divisions of NATO Mission -Iraq (NM-I).
The reconnaissance began with a flight to the Al-Assad Air Base where three Spanish Cougars are currently stationed, with a fourth aircraft to be added soon. These helicopters contribute to both the movements of Coalition units and the needs of the Spanish contingent, as well as supporting NM-I.
The next stop was at the Special Operations unit command post at the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Centre. The SOTG Force Commander showed how the different actions carried out under Coalition directives are coordinated, consisting mainly of advising the Iraqi security forces in their fight against DAESH
During the last day, Lieutenant General Agüero had the opportunity to meet with the main authorities leading the different departments of the NATO mission in Iraq.
This mission, which began in 2018, contributes to advising Iraqi security institutions at the ministerial level, military training centres.
