The Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment No. 74 and the Infantry Regiment No. 62 “Arapiles” are delivering these training modules within the framework of the EUMAM UA mission.
Spanish military personnel are currently conducting two training modules for members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as part of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA).
On one hand, the HAWK Air Defence Artillery Group, based at ‘El Copero’ Military Base in Seville and integrated into the 74th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, is delivering the 9th HAWK Air Defence Module. This training programme is structured theoretical sessions, technical instruction, and practical adaptation to the HAWK air defence system.
On the other hand, the 62nd Infantry Regiment “Arapiles”, based at ‘General Álvarez de Castro’ Barracks in San Clemente de Sasebas (Gerona), is responsible for the 8th M-113 Vehicle Maintenance Module. This module focuses on developing key technical capabilities, particularly maintenance and battlefield repair of the M-113 armoured platform, operated by both Spain and Ukraine.
These two modules require demanding technical preparation and follow an intensive training programme. They are a clear example of the close and longstanding defence cooperation between Ukraine and Spain.
These training efforts, along with other modules offered under the Spanish Armed Forces’ broader programme for Ukraine, contribute to strengthening the multilateral security system—at both regional and global levels—by promoting a coordinated and effective response to emerging threats.
EUMAM UA – Support to Ukraine
The European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) was approved by Council Decision on 17 October 2022. Its primary objective is to enhance the ability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, and to deter and respond to potential future military offensives by Russia or other hostile actors. EUMAM cooperates closely with like-minded international partners to provide coordinated military training support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The mission is open to the participation of third countries, and all training activities take place on EU soil. To date, 24 EU Member States, - including Spain, which plays a prominent role - have offered training modules and personnel to Ukrainian servicemen.
In Spain, training activities are directed by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC), under the authority of the Operations Command . The TTCC coordinates with various international structures, both within the European Union and through multinational frameworks. Since the launch of this European mission, Spain has expanded its range of training modules, now delivered by different units of the Spanish Armed Forces.
The TTCC comprises a headquarters in Burgos, led by Brigadier General José Agustín Carreras Postigo, commander of the “King Alfonso XIII” Brigade II of the Legion. Under the TTCC’s authority are the Combat Training Unit (CTU), permanently based in Toledo, which conducts both basic and specialised training, and the Training Modules (TMs), which are activated to deliver instruction in specific military specialties. These modules are conducted at Armed Forces facilities throughout Spain.
The Spanish Armed Forces possess extensive experience in the training and mentoring of military and security personnel from other nations, such as Iraq, Mali, Somalia, and others.
