San Clemente de Sasebas, Gerona
July 3, 2025

These courses have been delivered by military personnel from the Infantry Regiment ‘Barcelona’ No. 63, stationed at the General Álvarez de Castro Base in San Clemente de Sasebas, Girona.

Spanish military personnel from the Infantry Regiment ‘Barcelona’ No. 63 have completed the twelfth Squad Commander module, aimed at platoon leaders of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, within the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA).

This training, conducted at the General Álvarez de Castro Base in San Clemente de Sasebas, Girona, provided Ukrainian soldiers with training in conventional warfare as well as operations in urbanized areas.

Specifically, they demonstrated their tactical, technical, and leadership skills in commanding their units. Throughout the exercise, they were required to plan and carry out offensive and defensive operations in both open terrain and simulated urban environments. The maneuvers also involved establishing strongpoints, conducting prior reconnaissance of areas of interest, executing coordinated assaults on buildings, and finally, performing systematic clearance procedures in urban sectors under simulated fire; all under controlled conditions designed to replicate pressure and tactical realism.

During the training, Ukrainian soldiers, overseen by instructors from the Motorized Infantry Battalion ‘Cataluña I/63’, exhibited a high level of commitment, discipline, and dedication, reflecting the effectiveness of the instruction program. In this way, the main objective of the course was achieved: to ensure that each participant is capable of exercising effective platoon command in real operations, having demonstrably mastered the knowledge acquired throughout the module.

Overall, the cooperation between Spain and Ukraine within the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA) is strengthened daily through advanced tactical training, doctrinal exchange, and enhanced interoperability in an increasingly demanding security environment.

EUMAM UA: Support to Ukraine

The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) was approved by Council Decision on 17 October 2022. Its primary aim is to enhance the capability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, as well as to deter and respond to potential future military offensives by Russia or other aggressors. EUMAM works in close coordination with like-minded international partners to provide training support to Ukrainian forces.

Additionally, EUMAM is open to the participation of third countries. All mission activities take place on EU territory. To date, 24 EU Member States, -prominently including Spain - have contributed training modules and personnel to support Ukrainian military personnel.

In Spain, training activities are led by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC) - under the authority of the Operations Command, to which it is organically subordinated - and coordinates its activities with various international structures, not only within the framework of the European Union but also through multinational agreements. Since the launch of this European mission, Spain has expanded the range of training formats, which are now delivered across multiple units of the Spanish Armed Forces.

The TTCC is composed of a Headquarters located in Burgos, -commanded by Brigadier General José Agustín Carreras Postigo, head of the ‘Rey Alfonso XIII’ Brigade II of the Legion.- which oversees the Combat Training Unit  in Toledo  (a permanent structure responsible for both basic training and various specialized courses and the Training Modules , which are activated to deliver instruction in requested specialties. These courses take place at military facilities of the Spanish Armed Forces, distributed across different locations throughout Spanish territory.

The Spanish Armed Forces possess extensive experience in training missions for military personnel and other nation's security forces, including Iraq, Mali, and Somalia, among others.
