As part of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA), Spanish troops are training Ukrainian Armed Forces platoon leaders
The ‘Barcelona’ Infantry Regiment N. 63 has carried out a live-fire tactical exercise as part of the XI Squad Commander module, under the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission to Ukraine (EUMAM UA).
The exercise took place at General Álvarez de Castro Barracks, located in Sant Climent Sescebes, and consisted of planning and executing an attack on an enemy defensive position at platoon level. This type of scenario allows for the consolidation and certification of the training objectives set for this module.
During the activity, participants employed tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) aligned with conventional combat at section level. Key elements included fire coordination, tactical reconnaissance using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), advancing through tactical bounds, open terrain combat, and the neutralisation of fortified positions.
Such training activities enhance the tactical capabilities of allied and partner nations, help build a lasting network of strategic cooperation essential for tackling current and future security challenges, and strengthen bonds of camaraderie among troops.
Within the Squad Commander module, which is directed by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC), activities include operational planning, live-fire exercises during both day and night, urban warfare training, combat medical preparation, fire support coordination, and the employment of unmanned aerial platforms.
EUMAM UA – Support to Ukraine
The European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) was established by Council Decision on 17 October 2022. Its objective is to strengthen the capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, and to deter and respond to potential future military offensives from Russia or other aggressors.
EUMAM works in close coordination with like-minded international partners to provide training support to Ukrainian forces. The mission is also open to participation from third countries. All mission activities are conducted on EU soil. To date, 24 EU Member States – with Spain playing a prominent role – have contributed training modules and personnel to support Ukrainian troops.
In Spain, training activities are led by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC), which operates under the authority of the Operations Command. The TTCC coordinates its work with various international structures, both within the EU and through multinational frameworks. Since the launch of the mission, Spain has expanded the range of courses offered, which are now conducted across various units of the Spanish Armed Forces.
The Spanish Armed Forces have extensive experience in training missions for military and security personnel from other nations, including Iraq, Mali, and Somalia. Under EUMAM UA alone, Spain has so far trained over 7,500 Ukrainian military personnel.
