Two new training modules offered by the Spanish Armed Forces to Ukrainian military personnel, within the framework of the European Union Military Operation in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM-UA), have already begun.
On the one hand, the 26th Basic Recruit module begins, in which the Ukrainian soldiers will be trained in shooting techniques with different weapons systems, as well as in tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) of conventional combat in the open field through demanding day and night training exercises. This module, which lasts approximately 50 days, takes place at the facilities of the Tercio de Armada and at the Sierra del Retín Training Camp (CASR), both located in Cádiz.
On the other hand, the Training Unit of the Legion's Brigade will instruct Ukrainian soldiers in the planning and execution of Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT), which is the 8th module called MOUT for SQUAD. This training will take place in the facilities of the ‘Álvarez de Sotomayor’ base (Almería), which has one of the best which has one of the best facilities for MOUT in Europe.]
As in all training modules given in Spain, the objective of these trainings is to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, as well as to deter and respond to possible future military offensives by potential aggressors.
EUMAM UA, support to Ukraine
The EU Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) was approved by Council Decision on 17 October 2022. It aims to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and to deter and respond to possible future military offensives by Russia and other potential aggressors. EUMAM works closely with all other international akin partners to provide training support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Likewise, the EUMAM is also open to participation by third States. All mission activities are carried out on EU soil. So far, 24 EU Member States, notably Spain, have offered training modules and personnel to Ukrainian military
In Spain, training activities are managed by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC), under the direction of the Operations Command, from which it is organically dependent. It coordinates its activities with different international structures, not only within the European Union, but also in the framework of multinational agreements. Since the beginning of this European mission, Spain has broadened the format of the courses, which are now being conducted in different units of the Spanish Armed Forces.
The TTCC consists of a Headquarters in Burgos, responsible for the Combat Training Unit in Toledo which is permanent and carries out both basic training and specific courses and the Training Modules (TM), which are activated to provide instruction in the requested specialties. These courses are held in the facilities that the Army and the Navy have in various locations throughout Spain.
