November 27, 2024
  • The training will be provided by the Military Legal Corps and the Military Health Corps at the Military School of Legal Studies of the Central Defence Academy.

For the first time, training in International Humanitarian Law begins for Ukrainian military personnel in the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM-UA), under the operational control of the Operations Command.

The course was inaugurated by the General Director of the Central Defence Academy and the Colonel Auditor Director of the Military School of Legal Studies, who is also the chief of this training programme.

The module, lasting around two weeks, takes place in the classrooms of the Military School of Legal Studies of the Central Defence Academy.

As part of the training programme, topics addressed include the fundamentals of international humanitarian law, the protection of victims, the conduct of hostilities and the system of effectiveness of international humanitarian law.

This course represents a significant asset for Spanish international policy by contributing to efforts to defend Ukraine's sovereignty and respect for International Law.

EUMAM UA, support to Ukraine

This EU mission aims to enhance the military capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to effectively conduct military operations, aimed at defending its territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, effectively exercising its sovereignty and protecting the civilian population.

In Spain, these training activities are directed by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC) -under the direction of the Operations Command, to which it depends organically- and coordinates its activities with different international structures, not only within the European Union sphere, but also within the framework of multinational agreements.

The TTCC consists of a Headquarters in Burgos, on which depend the Combat Training Unit (UFC in Spanish) in Toledo, which has a permanent character and performs both basic training and different specific courses, and the Training Modules (TM), which are activated to provide instruction in the specialities that are requested. These courses take place in the facilities that the Army and the Navy have in various locations throughout Spain.

The Spanish Armed Forces have extensive experience in training personnel from the Armed Forces and security forces of other countries, such as Iraq and Somalia, among others.
