  • The Marine Corps Brigade ‘Tercio de Armada’ trains military personnel of the Ukrainian Armed Forces within the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA)

Another group of soldiers from the Ukrainian Armed Forces has successfully completed the Basic Training Course, provided by the Marine Corps Brigade from the Third Company of the First Landing Battalion of the ‘Tercio de Armada’ (BRIMAR-TEAR in Spanish).

The main mission of this training module was to train Ukrainian soldiers to carry out tasks specific of a combatant in conventional units. With the module’s completion, this mission has been successfully achieved.

During the monthlong module, exercises have taken place with the focus on training Ukrainian soldiers in techniques, tactics and procedures in accordance with the military doctrine of conventional Marine Corps units, specializing in offensive, defensive, urban combat and fire, among others.

This training will enable Ukrainian soldiers to integrate themselves efficiently into their conventional combat units in order to protect their territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders.

This course is the eighth training module provided by the Marine Corps since Operation EUMAM UA first started in April 2023. Similarly to previous modules, the activities have taken place at the unit’s facilities in San Fernando and at the Training Camp ‘Sierra del Retín’.

EUMAM UA, support for Ukraine

The main objective of this EU mission is to contribute to the enhancement of the military capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine so that they are able to efficiently conduct their military operations, aiming at the defence of their territorial integrity within their internationally recognised borders, their effective exercise of sovereignty and the protection of civilians.

In Spain, these training activities are leaded by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC) – under the direction of the Operations Command – to which it reports organically- and coordinates its activities with different international structures, not only in the EU domain, but also within the framework of multinational agreements.

The TTCC consists of Burgos Headquarters, where the Combat Training Unit (UFC in Spanish) of Toledo –which has permanent nature and carries out both basic training and a wide variety of specific courses– and the Training Module, which are activated to provide training in the requested specialties, both adhere. These courses take place in the facilities of the Army and the Navy that are located in different places across the Spanish national territory.

Spain’s Armed Forces have an extensive experience in missions of training military personnel of the Security Armed Forces and Corps from other countries, such as Iraq, Mali and Somalia, among others.
