The training of Ukrainian military personnel in different combat capabilities is a commitment acquired by Spain with the European Union within the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA).
This training is being carried out on Spanish territory since November 2022, when the structure of the 'Toledo Training Coordination Centre' (TTCC) was created to direct and coordinate the mission from its headquarters located in Burgos. Brigadier General Fernando Ruiz Gómez, head of the "Guzmán el Bueno X" Brigade, has been appointed as General Director of the TTCC since February of this year.
The TTCC has recently surpassed the figure of 4,000 Ukrainian military personnel trained in different combat capabilities, in some cases corresponding to basic training, and in others to more specialised training, all of them upon the express request of the Ukrainian government.
On the one hand, this demanding task of training Ukrainian soldiers is carried out by the Combat Training Unit (UFC in Spanish), which has a permanent nature and is located in Toledo. It is the largest training unit, made up of soldiers from the Garellano Infantry Regiment No. 45 within the "Guzmán el Bueno" X Brigade.
On the other hand, the TTCC consists of different specific training modules, which are distributed throughout the rest of Spanish territory and are activated according to the needs required by Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the mission, the Army has given courses in Basic Training, Maintenance of Armoured Tracked Transport Vehicle, Leopard Tank Crewman, Health Care for Casualties in Combat, Counter Improvised Explosive Devices, Forest Assault Operations, Combat Sapper, Advanced Combat Course, Non-Commissioned Officer Training, Mine Clearance, Operations Planning, Military Operations in Urban Terrain, HAWK Anti-Aircraft Missile, 105/14 Howitzer Crews, Advanced Artillery Observer, Geospatial Analysis. Moreover, this year for the first time, the PATRIOT and NASAMS air defence artillery systems maintenance modules have been taught.
The Defence Staff, through the Joint Cyberspace Command, provided a module on Cyber Defence.
The Navy, for its part, has been the instructor for the Basic Training and Operations Planning courses. As a novelty, in 2024 it has begun to teach the Underwater Demining course.
The Air and Space Force, in 2023, provided the Air Support Conduct and Anti-Aircraft Aspide Missile courses.
This year, the Civil Guard has begun to actively contribute to the training of Ukrainian military personnel by incorporating the Anti-Terrorism training module into the TTCC.
After surpassing the figure of four thousand Ukrainian military personnel trained, the Spanish Armed Forces and the Civil Guard will continue their mission, training hundreds more Ukrainian military personnel during the rest of the year. The training of Ukrainian military personnel in different combat capabilities is a commitment acquired by Spain with the European Union within the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA).
