Madrid
February 16, 2023
  • 'Toledo Training Coordination Centre’ (TTCC) coordinates the implementation of training activities conducted by Spain in the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA)

Spain will receive a new contingent of Ukrainian military personnel to be trained in specific military capabilities, as an extension of EU cooperation in military training of Ukrainian personnel in response to Russia's illegitimate invasion of Ukraine.

In general, the range of needs expressed by Ukraine is met by the Army, the Air, and Space Army and the Navy in different locations in Spain.

Spain's effort and commitment to the Ukrainian nation requires a significant number of means and personnel countrywide.

Following the initial periods already conducted in different locations since last November, a new contingent of 125 Ukrainian soldiers is scheduled to arrive today, 16 FEB 2023.

They will be deployed in Toledo and Zaragoza facilities for instruction and training in specific skills: health, mine clearance, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) combat, tank crews, and tank maintenance specialists.

Most of them, around 70, will be in Toledo, where the Combat Training Unit will train one group in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) and two groups in IED combat and demining.

Leopard 2 A4 tanks

In Zaragoza, the Army will train 55 Ukrainian crews for Spanish Leopard 2 A4 tanks, as well as maintenance specialists, essential to guarantee the operability of these systems.

These training activities are conducted under the direction of the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC), in coordination with the EU Military Planning and Conduct Capability (MPCC) Headquarters, under the umbrella of Operation EUMAN-UA.

EUMAM UA is ready to adapt to the operational needs of the Ukrainian armed forces, being able to adapt its organisation and personnel to meet the required training in accordance with the evolving situation.

Spain's Armed Forces have vast experience in training missions for personnel of the Armed Forces and security forces from other countries in the EU (CAR, Mali and Somalia) and in the context of other collaborations with our allies (Iraq).

The involvement of teams of instructors, if required, from other EU Member States in national training centres is not ruled out.

The Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces, provide the necessary operational and logistical support, and training. It shows Spanish society's commitment to democratic principles and international laws.
