The Balearic Operational Command is deployed on the island of Mallorca in its first presence, surveillance and deterrence Operation of 2026.

On this occasion, a platoon belonging to the Palma 47 Regiment is conducting patrols in Mallorca to help improve awareness of the environment and provide comprehensive protection for the population. During this presence, surveillance and deterrence operation, efforts have been focused on the municipalities of Alaró, Bunyola, Puigpunyent, Valldemossa, Andratx, Algaida and Calviá.

In the words of platoon sergeant Luis Torrejón Romero, this operation ‘aims to plan, prepare and execute these surveillance and deterrence operations on the island of Mallorca, thereby continuing to achieve the objectives set by the command.’

In these territorial deployments, the Balearic Operational Command provides the Land Operational Command with a tactical subgroup to conduct these exercises. Sergeant Torrejón explains that this tactical subgroup ‘has several activations per year, some as such, others at section level and others at platoon level”.

At the end of every activation, the head of the unit assesses its compliance through direct observation. Activities are scheduled close to the population to achieve the desired level of effectiveness in presence. ‘Our activities are aimed at ensuring safety and working closely with citizens, building trust and contributing to the common good,’ states the sergeant.

In this regard, it should be noted that patrols will carry out routes in both urban and rural areas, paying special attention to strategic areas and communication routes. The aim is to help strengthen cooperation with the civil authorities and ensure a rapid response to any eventuality.

Land Operations Command and presence, surveillance and deterrence operations

The Land Operations Command, under the command of Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, is the Armed Forces body responsible for planning, conducting and monitoring all these operations under the operational control of the Operations Command.

Along with the Land Operations Command, the Maritime, Air, Space, and Cyberspace Operations Commands make up the Permanent Commands structure. Every day, around 850 Armed Forces personnel are involved in permanent operations, which are carried out under the operational control of the Operations Command.

Presence, surveillance and deterrence operations are an effective tool to maintain surveillance of national sovereign spaces, allowing for early detection of threats and facilitating an immediate and viable response to a potential crisis.
