The patrol vessel Medas has finished her Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence Operation (OPVD) in the waters of the Alboran Sea and is now docked at the Puntales naval station in Cadiz.
The aim of this activity is to maintain security, detect potential threats and facilitate an immediate and viable response to a potential crisis in our maritime area of permanent interest.
The Medas began this OPVD on 12 October, coinciding with Spain's National Day celebrations, symbolising the Navy's permanent commitment to protecting Spain's maritime interests.
During her patrols, the PVZ Medas is integrated into the Maritime Operational Command (MOM), under the operational control of the Operations Command Commander (CMOPS), maintaining close coordination with the Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Centre (COVAM) and the patrol boat Centinela, which it relieved in the area.
The PVZ ‘MEDAS’
The patrol boat “Medas” is part of the Maritime Action Force (FAM) which, within the Fleet, is made up of a group of units whose main task is to prepare to protect national maritime interests and control maritime areas of national interest.
With a comprehensive approach, they ensure permanent cooperation with the various government agencies with jurisdiction in the maritime sphere, contributing to the State's action at sea.
Maritime Operational Command (MOM)
The Maritime Operational Command (MOM) is the body of the operational structure of the Armed Forces, subordinate to the Chief of Defence (JEMAD) and responsible, at its level, for planning, conducting and monitoring operations involving presence, surveillance and deterrence in maritime areas of sovereignty, responsibility and national interest. It is under the command of the Admiral of Maritime Action (ALMART) and is based in Cartagena.
The Land Operations Command (MOT), Maritime Operations Command (MOM), Air Operations Command (MOA), Space Operations Command (MOESPA) and Cyberspace Operations Command (MOC) make up the Permanent Commands structure. Every day, some 3,000 Armed Forces personnel are involved in permanent operations under the operational control of the Operations Command.
