The Offshore Patrol Vessel (BAM) ‘Furor’ continues to maintain a presence in Spanish jurisdictional waters and sovereign territories in North Africa, as part of the Presence, Surveillance, and Deterrence Operations (OPVD). Along its deployment, which began on 10 June, the vessel has maintained an active naval presence around the Chafarinas Islands, where it has provided support to the Spanish Army detachment, contributed to the protection of natural resources, and helped prevent any illicit activities that could pose a threat to the security of waters of national interest.
During this mission, Furor - which is integrated into the Maritime Operational Command (MOM) and under the operational control of the Commander of the Operations Command (MOPS) - has also carried out operational tasks in other strategically significant areas of the Alboran Sea, always bearing in mind the ensurance of maritime domain awareness, monitor maritime traffic, among other duties.
Maritime Operational Command (MOM)
Maritime Operational Command (MOM, in Spanish) is the body within the operational structure of the Spanish Armed Forces – subordinated to the Chief of Defence (JEMAD, in Spanish) – responsible, to its level, of the planning, conducting and monitoring of operations of presence, surveillance and deterrence of maritime areas of sovereignty, responsibility and national interest. It is commanded by Rear Admiral Victoriano Gilabert Agote, Commander of Maritime Operational Command, who is Headquartered in Cartagena.
Pressence, Surveillance and Deterrence Operations
Pressence, Surveillance and Deterrence Operations are an effective tool to maintain surveillance on the areas of national sovereignty, enabling early detection of threats and allowing for an inmediate and viable response in potential crisis situations.
The Land, Maritime, Air, Space and Cyberspace Operational Commands (MOT,MOA,MOESPA and MOC, in Spanish)make up the Permanent Command Structure. Every day, thousands of Armed Forces personnel are engaged in these operations (commonly referred to as PSDOs) under the operational control of the Operations Command (MOPS), integrated within the respective operational commands.
