First mission of MQ-9 predator b in the framework of Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence operations

  •  This unmanned aerial system is an integrated system in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions; it is also a key asset in Air operations.

MQ-9 Predator B –a remote piloted aircraft system (RPAS) has accomplished its firs operational mission in the framework of Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence Operations (OPVD, in Spanish), - integrated in the Air Operational Command (MOA, in Spanish) and under operational control of the Commander of Operations Command (CMOPS, in Spanish) – in support to NATO Operation:  ‘Sea Guardian’.

This mission has been carried out by 233 Squadron, Ala 23 personnel, who operate Predator B from Air Base of Talavera la Real. Crew has consisted of the aircraft pilot, a sensor operator and the cell Mission Product Exploitation and Dissemination (MPED) of the Aerospace Intelligence and Targeting Centre (CINTAER, in Spanish), as the body responsible for generating intelligence products through the exploitation of imagery obtained by this system. Additionally, the operation coordination was assumed by MACOM Air Operations Centre (AOC ISR), as the body responsible for ensuring compliance with the objectives established in the operation plans. 

This operational activity stands a milestone in the integration of the system into real maritime surveillance, security and deterrence, actively contributing to Allied efforts in the Western Mediterranean Sea.  Furthermore, it has projected the system onto an international stage within the scope of NATO operations, providing capabilities for the sustainment of prolonged in theatre operations, strategic surveillance and consolidating its integration into joint and combined structures. 

 

Air Operational Command

 

Air Operational Command is the body within the operational structure of the Armed Forces, under command of the Chief of Defense, accountable for planning, conducting and monitoring permanent surveillance and security operations in the airspaces under national sovereignty, responsibility and interest. MOA operates under Air Combat Command (MACOM, in Spanish) and it is stationed at the Air Base of Torrejón. 

 

Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence operations 

 

Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence operations are a significant tool to maintain vigilance over land, maritime and airspaces of national sovereignty, allowing to detect beforehand threaths as well as to provide an immediate and viable response to any potential crisis.  

Land, Maritime, Air, Space and Cyberspace operational commands (MOT, MOM, MOA, MOESPA and MOC, in Spanish) make up the structure of Permanent Commands, responsible for OPVD under operational control of the Operational Command.
