The ‘Isla de León’ Patrol Vessel (P-83) continues its naval presence operations, maritime surveillance, and sovereignty space control, with the aim of ensuring comprehensive security in the waters of Ceuta and the Spanish enclaves in North Africa
This mission is carried out within the framework of the Armed Forces' Presence, Surveillance, and Deterrence Operations, with the vessel integrated into the Maritime Operational Command (MOM in Spanish) and under the operational control of the Operations Command (MOPS).
Among its primary tasks, the ‘Isla de León’ will conduct activities related to verifying and controlling maritime traffic, supervising maritime and fishing activities, and overseeing the preservation of the marine environment in Spanish sovereign waters along the North African coastline. All of this contributes to the protection of the territory. Additionally, during its activation period, the vessel is also scheduled to dock at the Port of Melilla.
Patrol Vessel ‘Isla de León’
The ‘Isla de León’ (P-83) is part of the Maritime Action Force (FAM in Spanish) and is named after the Isla de León, which houses the city of San Fernando, Cádiz. The vessel is part of the ‘Toralla’ class, alongside the patrol ships ‘Toralla’ (P-81) and ‘Formentor’ (P-82) based in Cartagena, and ‘Isla Pinto’ (P-84) based in Melilla. It is a RODMAN 101 class vessel, unique in the Spanish Navy due to its length of 101 feet (approximately 31 metres), having previously served in the Galician Coast Guard Service until it was transferred to the Spanish Navy in October 2022.
The primary duties of the ‘Isla de León’ are maritime surveillance and naval presence in areas of sovereignty and national interest, contributing to maritime security operations and supporting civil authorities with responsibility for state actions at sea. The ‘Isla de León’ is integrated into the Maritime Action Force Units Command in Cádiz, with its base in the autonomous city of Ceuta.
Maritime Operational Command (MOM)
The Maritime Operational Command (MOM) is part of the operational structure of the Armed Forces and is subordinate to the Chief of Defence (JEMAD in Spanish). It is responsible for planning, conducting, and monitoring Presence, Surveillance, and Deterrence Operations in maritime areas of sovereignty, responsibility, and national interest. The MOM is under the command of the Admiral of Maritime Action and is based in Cartagena.
Presence, Surveillance, and Deterrence Operations
Presence, Surveillance, and Deterrence Operations are a highly effective tool for maintaining vigilance over sovereign spaces, enabling early detection of threats and facilitating an immediate and viable response to potential crises.
The Land Operational Command (MOT), Maritime Operational Command (MOM), Air Operational Command (MOA), Space Operational Command (MOESPA), and Cybersecurity Operational Command (MOC) form the structure of the Permanent Commands. On a daily basis, approximately 3,000 Armed Forces personnel are involved in these permanent operations under the operational control of the Operations Command (MOPS).
