The mission contributes to ensuring maritime safety in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea
The Area Surveillance Patrol Vessel (PVZ) 'Medas' (P-26) has started a presence, surveillance and deterrence operation in order to contribute to guarantee the security of the maritime areas of national interest, specifically in the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea. This mission is carried out with the 'Medas' integrated in the Maritime Operational Command (MOM) and under the direction of the Joint Operations Command (MOPS).
PVZ 'Medas
The PVZ 'Medas' is the sixth of the ten patrol vessels of the 'Anaga' class built in the eighties and one of the eight ships under the Command of the Maritime Action Force (FAM) in Cadiz. It is designed to carry out security missions, protection of national maritime interests and control of spaces of sovereignty and national interest. It also performs missions of control and protection of maritime traffic; surveillance and control of fishing.
Maritime Operational Command (MOM)
The Maritime Operational Command (MOM) is the body of the operational structure of the Armed Forces, subordinate to the Chief of Defense (JEMAD) responsible, at his level, for planning, conducting and monitoring the permanent surveillance and security operations of the maritime areas of sovereignty, responsibility and national interest. It is under the command of the Admiral of Maritime Action and its headquarters are located in Cartagena.

Presence, Surveillance and Deterrence Operations are an effective tool for maintaining the security of sovereign spaces, allowing for the early detection of threats and facilitating an immediate and immediate response to a potential crisis.
The Land (MOT), Maritime (MOM), Air (MOA), Cyberspace (MOC) and Space (MOESPA) Operational Commands make up the Permanent Command structure. On a daily basis, there are about 3,000 Armed Forces personnel involved in this type of operations under the operational control of the Joint Operations Command.
