The offshore patrol vessel "Atalaya" has completed a maritime surveillance mission in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, the Alboran Sea and in the national sovereignty areas of North Africa, under the operational control of the Operations Command.
The Navy ship began the mission on May 27, Monday, integrated into the operational structure of the Armed Forces, under the control of the Maritime Operations Command.
The main mission of the "Atalaya" has been to guarantee the security of maritime spaces of national sovereignty and interest. For this purpose, it carried out maritime surveillance tasks on the Southern Iberian Peninsula coast and in the Mediterranean Sea, covering the Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). It also carried out various activities of surveillance and control of maritime traffic, supervision of fishing activity and protection of the most important maritime lines of communication, all in close coordination with the Maritime Action Surveillance Centre (COVAM).
She highlighted her reinforced naval presence in the Alboran Island, as well as in the sovereignty places in North Africa. She has also contributed to the surveillance and protection of the underwater archaeological heritage and areas of special environmental protection.
The ship counted with the participation of an Operational Security Team (EOS) from the ‘Tercio Norte’ composed of 7 marines. The EOS increases certain operational and security capabilities to facilitate the accomplishment of the mission.
The 'Atalaya' has completed this mission after 26 voyages and more than 4000 miles sailed.
