  • The exercise will take place over Nigerian territorial waters

Today, as part of the 'African Deployment', Spanish patrol vessel 'Vigía' has begun a collaboration with five ships and air units of the Nigerian Navy and the US Navy ship 'USS Hershel Woody Williams', assigned to the Sixth Fleet. After the exercise, which will take place over Nigerian territorial waters, the Spanish vessel will call at the port of Lagos.

This collaboration reflects Spain's strong commitment to maritime security and the struggle against illicit activities in this region. Likewise, this joint exercise is an excellent opportunity to promote mutual knowledge and strengthen ties of trust between Spain, Nigeria and the United States.

The exercise has focused primarily on counter-piracy training activities based on a current and credible scenario developed by the Nigerian Navy based on its experiences in the area. Over the course of the collaboration, not only activities related to maritime security were carried out, but also incidents related to the areas of health and manoeuvre were practised.

Vigía's deploymet started on June, 19th and will continue until October,19th. Over that period of time it is scheduled to call at ports in Cape Verde, Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, Angola, Senegal and Mauritania.
