The Maritime Action Ship (BAM) “Tornado” set off this Thursday from its home port in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to carry out maritime surveillance activities, military cooperation and support for the Defence Diplomacy Plan, over a two month period,
During the deployment “Tornado” vessel plans to carry out maritime surveillance activities and knowledge of the maritime environment, contributing to increase Maritime Security in the region, which is threatened mainly by acts of piracy and armed robbery at sea, illicit trafficking in persons, drugs and weapons, and illegal fishing.
Likewise, it is planned to carry out military cooperation activities with the riparian countries, fostering mutual knowledge and trust and helping to increase their maritime security capabilities and improve their coordination and cooperation procedures within the framework of the regional maritime security architecture established in the Yaoundé process back in 2013.
In addition, the ship will act in accordance with the comprehensive perspective that Spain applies to promote stability, development and security in the countries of the region using the actions to support diplomatic delegations.
