Observers from the EUTM- MOZAMBIQUE mission carry out a reconnaissance at Mangaja da Costa

In Maputo, Mozambique
January 31, 2024
  • The activity has been conducted in the area of the 'ARINGA24' exercise.

The Spanish contribution to EUTM Mozambique consists of two military observers who are integrated into the EUMN HQ (EUMN HQ) located in the capital of Mozambique, Maputo.

As part of the planned activities, several members of EUMN HQ have taken part in the first reconnaissance of the area where the ARINGA exercise is scheduled to take place in the vicinity of Maganja da Costa, a town located 1,634 km from Maputo and 160 km from the nearest airport (Quelimane). This reconnaissance was conducted jointly with the FADM (Mozambique Armed Defence Forces) with a delegation composed of members of HQ FADM. Given the state of communications in Mozambique, the exercise area is a four day drive from Maputo and a four hour drive from the nearest airport, presenting therefore a real logistical challenge.

Mangaja da Costa is a small village in Zambezia province bordering the Indian Ocean coast. It is known for its vast expanses of mangas (mango trees). The villagers live happily with virtually nothing due to the limited economic development of the area and the high level of poverty.

This is the first of the two planned reconnaissance exercises to be conducted for the joint exercise by the two QRFs being trained in the multinational mission. TACP teams from the FADM will also be incorporated.  ARINGA will be conducted in the last three weeks of March.

Resolution of the Council of the European Union. On 12 July 2021, it was decided to establish an EU military training mission in Mozambique (European Union Training Mission - EUTM Mozambique). The aim of the mission is to train and assist the Mozambican armed forces to protect the civilian population and to restore security and safety in the province of Cabo Delgado.

Objective of the EUTM Mozambique mission. To develop the capabilities of the selected units of the Mozambican armed forces in order to establish a future rapid reaction force. In particular, the mission will provide military training, including operational readiness, specialised counter-terrorism training, and training and education on the protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian and human rights law.
