Military assistance mission in Mozambique takes on the challenge of its new tasks

En Maputo, Mozambique

  • Inauguration of the new Mission  of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique
The European Union mission in Mozambique has completed its transition from a training mission, the European Union Training Mission (EUTM), to a military assistance mission, the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM). This evolution marks a significant change in the nature of EU support to the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM).

During its mandate, EUTM achieved several important milestones, including the formation of eleven Quick Reaction Units (QRF) for the FADM. These units have been instrumental in improving Mozambique's ability to respond to the insurgency by providing specialised training in tactical operations and crisis management.

EUMAM's new mission has the challenge of consolidating the achievements made by EUTM, but also faces new challenges. Its main objective will be to advise the FADM in the employment of trained QRFs, ensuring that units not only maintain their level of preparedness, but also improve their operational capability in complex scenarios, all within the framework of international humanitarian law.

Spain has been a pillar of the mission since its inception, contributing observers to the EUTM structure. This participation will continue under the EUMAM mandate, with the presence of Spanish military personnel who will continue to contribute to the mission, bringing their experience and commitment to supporting stability and security in Mozambique.

On 11 September, the inauguration ceremony was held for the new Mission Force Commander, Portuguese Brigadier General Luís Fernando Machado Barroso, who assumed the leadership of EUMAM. The ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant General Michiel Van der Laan (Director of Military Planning and Execution Capability & Mission Commander) and was attended by senior military commanders together with representatives of the FADM, ambassadors of the European countries represented in the mission, and other civilian and military authorities. This event reaffirms the commitment of the international community to the stability of Mozambique and underlines the importance of cooperation between Europe and Mozambique in the fight against the insurgency in Cape Delgado.

The Spanish Armed Forces, through their participation in missions such as EUMAM, reinforce the multilateral system that allows for a coordinated response to future regional threats and crises. In an interdependent world, it is essential to join forces with international organisations such as the UN, NATO, the EU and the OSCE to guarantee our security and an international order based on clear and shared rules. Thus, Spain reaffirms its commitment to peace and global stability through its active involvement in these multilateral forums.
