Over the last quarter, the European Union Training Mission for Somalia (EUTM-S) has carried out a series of training activities focused on the professional, technical and tactical development of Somali military personnel.

Specifically, training has been provided in combat, unit leadership, operational planning, logistical procedures, first aid, international humanitarian law and, finally, civilian control of the armed forces in Somalia's democratic regime. These courses have been designed in close coordination with the Somali Ministry of Defence to meet the needs of ground units.

In carrying out its mandate, EUTM-S has also provided strategic advice at ministerial level and to the Somali National Army Headquarters, with the aim of promoting effective command structures and sustainable processes that strengthen institutional development in the defence sector.

One of the priority areas has been training in base security, patrols, combat first aid and basic recruit training, which has enabled Somali troops to acquire the skills they need to operate autonomously and professionally in a complex and challenging environment.

The EUTM-S, established in 2010, operates in close collaboration with other international missions and local actors, in line with the European Union's comprehensive approach to Somalia. Its objective is to contribute to the establishment of effective, accountable armed forces at the service of the Somali people.

In this context, up to 20 Spanish military personnel are deployed, occupying positions both in the field of training, where Spain exercises leadership, and in military advisory and headquarters roles, led by Colonel Enrique Cobo Romero, as Chief of Staff of the European mission.
