The frigate ‘Numancia’, flagship of Operation Atalanta, demonstrated its organisation, operations and capabilities.
The frigate ‘Numancia’ hosted diplomatic and EU body representatives during its port call in Mombasa. The visit aimed to show Operation Atalanta’s work and the ship’s capabilities.
The Force Commander of Operation EUNAVFOR Atalanta, Rear Admiral Javier Vázquez Sanz, welcomed Spain’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jaime Moreno Bau; and the ambassadors of Denmark, Poland, Belgium and Portugal, as well as representatives from the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA).
The visit provided an overview of the Mission of the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) in the Western Indian Ocean as part of Operation Atalanta. They also learned how the frigate ‘Numancia’ is organised and how it supports the operation’s objectives.
The visit raised awareness of Operation Atalanta among European and diplomatic representatives in the region and highlighted Spain’s contribution to maritime security and protection of shipping routes in the Indian Ocean.
