Operation ‘Atalanta’ handover ceremony in the port of Djibouti. The frigate ‘Canarias’ ends its four-month deployment, and the ‘Numancia’ joins the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR ATALANTA) in its fight against piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
Commanded by Commander Alfredo Saco, the 'Numancia' integrates a more than two hundred men and women force where, in addition to the crew, it has an Operational Security Team (EOS) of Marines, and an Embarked Air Unit consisting of a SH60-F helicopter and a UAV 'Scan Eagle' system. Additionally, it has a “ROLE 1” medical team.
Participation in Operation 'Atalanta' is part of Spain's firm commitment to the European Union's Common Security and Defense Policy, in terms of providing a comprehensive European Union response to the resurgence of piracy, while contributing to regional stability and security. It is also responsible for protecting World Food Program vessels.
