A delegation of members of the European Parliament visited the military personnel of the European Union countries deployed in Djibouti, the Italian Logistics Base, the frigate 'Reina Sofia' and the Detachment Orion.
Upon arrival, the delegation was received by the Force Commander of the Spanish contingent, Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Rodriguez Sacristán and the Area Chiefs of the contingent. Afterwards, the operations personnel of the detachment explained the capabilities and mission of the D4 VIGMA in the area. Finally, the delegation visited the aircraft on the platform where they were able to see the material and equipment carried by the aircraft.
The mission of the Subcommittee on Security and Defense (SEDE) is to allow a thorough public debate and parliamentary scrutiny of all the Union's actions in the field of the Common Security and Defense Policy, especially in terms of institutions, capabilities and operations. The SEDE Subcommittee aims to contribute actively to the elaboration of the Union's security and defense policy. The development of relations with strategic partners, in particular NATO and the United Nations, as well as with third countries advocating multilateralism and an international order at the service of peace, will also be at the heart of the Subcommittee's future activities.
Operation Atalanta, under the flag of the European Union, is part of Spain's commitment to maintaining maritime security off the coasts of Somalia and neighboring countries in the Indian Ocean region.
