  • Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to meet Iceland’s Peacetime Preparedness Needs Mission (ASIC IPPN)

It is a key element of the Persistent Effort Operation and belongs to NATO security measures introduced in 2014, after the illegal and illegitimate of the Peninsule of Crimea by Russia. Alliance implemented these security measures with the aim of showcasing allies’ firm collective determination, NATO’S defensive nature and deterring Russia from aggression or threaten of aggression against allies. Such measures are expandable and flexible, according to variations of the safety situations to which Alliance might face and they send a strong, unmistakable message to public opinion.

Its main purpose is :

·                   Preserving the integrity of NATO’S airspace: Monitoring and answering any unidentified or potentially hostile air activity nearby Alliance’s borders.

·                   Training and Cooperation:  Encouraging interoperability and joint training among Air Forces of allied Nations.

·                   Deterrence: Demonstrate NATO’S capability to promptly reacting to any air threaten whatsoever.

  • STINGA detachment

It is an Air Tactic detachment belonging to Spanish Air and Space Force, which contributes to Air Policing tasks, reinforced on NATO’s Eastern Flank. This detachment is placed at Naval Air Station in Keflavik, near the same named coastal town and it operates under command of Lieutenant Colonel Rafael Ichaso Franco.

STINGA took over from a Czech Republic detached by mid July, 2025, fulfilling surveillance of Iceland’a airspace mission ever since.

STINGA Detachment is comprised of 6 C.15 aircrafts from ‘Ala 15’ in Zaragoza. The Detachment activity has been marked by, on one hand, the main Air Policing Mission, with the Detachment assets fully integrated within the Iceland and NATO’s Air Defence Systems; and on the other hand, by the local training flights, providing in order to keeping and enhancing air crews’ capabilities.

  • August 16th. STINGA contingent ended its deployment.

  • July 28th. Start of the STINGA contingent.
