  •  This is the first time that a Navy submarine has participated in this allied mission

The submarine Isaac Peral (S-81) set sail from its base in Cartagena today to begin its deployment in Mediterranean waters as part of NATO's Noble Shield maritime security and deterrence operation. This is the first time that a Spanish Navy submarine has participated in the mission.

A farewell ceremony, which is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Fernando Clavijo Rey-Stolle, was held at the Navy Submarine Flotilla in Cartagena. The ceremony was presided over by Captain (Navy) Alfonso Carrasco Santos, commander of the Submarine Fleet (COMSUBMAR), who wished the crew members smooth sailing on this deployment.

The main objective of the Isaac Peral in this mission is to reinforce Spain's contribution to NATO's collective defence by maintaining a persistent naval presence and conducting surveillance to guarantee freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Mediterranean Sea.

Additionally, the ship's crew will promote improved interoperability between allied and associated navies by conducting joint exercises and patrols, thereby increasing deterrence and defence through the visible presence of Allied forces.
