  • The ship, which is part of Standing Nato Maritime Group (SNMG-2), took part in this NATO exercise in Italian waters.

The frigate 'Cristobal Colon' (F-105), currently deployed in the Mediterranean Sea as part of SNMG-2, has completed the electronic warfare exercise 'Dynamic Guard 22-II', which took place in the waters of the Gulf of Taranto (Italy).

As a preliminary step, the ship docked at the Taranto Naval Base (Italy) to carry out various activities to prepare the exercise. The frigate also received on board SNMG-2 staff members for various coordination meetings.

IED training was also conducted for SNMG-2 personnel who are currently in the process of being assessed for certification. The training was conducted by the Operational Security Team (EOS) on board and included practical exercises in explosive detection in a vehicle stationed near the ship..

During 'Dynamic Guard 22-II', the ship has taken part in more than forty exercises focusing on Electronic Warfare (EW) and anti-missile defence (ASMD). Thanks to the capabilities of its AEGIS combat system and its SPY-1D(V) multi-function radar, the ship has performed the role of Anti-Air Warfare Commander (AAWC). It has also been designated as aircraft control unit (ACU).

Dynamic Guard 22-II is a biannual NATO exercise led by the Commander of SNMG-2. During the exercise, NATO countries practise Electronic Warfare and Missile Defence tactics and procedures. This year's exercise has been supported by Italy as host country. In addition, the presence of allied units at sea ensures deterrence in the Mediterranean Sea and reinforces the commitment of allied nations to maritime security.

SNMG-2 comprises naval and air units from various allies countries. The role of SNMG-2 is to provide NATO with a rapid reaction force in naval scenarios.

During its integration, the frigate 'Cristóbal Colón' contributes to the operations by providing a high air defence and detection capacity thanks to its AEGIS combat system and the SPY-1D (V) multifunction radar. It is manned by 230 men and women, with an Operational Security Team (EOS), an Embarked Air Unit (UNAEMB) - SH-60B helicopter-, and an Interception Controller.
