This is the first time that the Spanish submarine has been deployed as part of the expeditionary strike group, where it will play an active role in protecting maritime areas of interest
The submarine ‘Isaac Peral’ (S-81) has joined the ‘Dédalo 26-02’ Expeditionary Strike Group for the first time. It will subsequently join the allied maritime security operation ‘Sea Guardian’ (OSG). Both missions reinforce Spain’s firm commitment to deterrence, maritime security and the fight against international terrorism in areas of strategic importance to our allies.
The submarine, which set sail from the Cartagena Naval Yard, is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Fernando Clavijo Rey-Stolle. During its voyage, the ‘Isaac Peral’ will make logistical and operational stopovers in the Canary Islands and in Italy, before setting course back to the mainland after completing its patrol, surveillance and maritime monitoring tasks.
The Commander of the Navy’s Submarine Flotilla (COMSUBMAR) in Cartagena, Captain Alfonso Carrasco Santos, presided over the vessel’s farewell ceremony, emphasising the importance of the tasks entrusted to it within this dual operational framework.
The submarine’s integration into the ‘Dédalo 26-02’ Expeditionary Strike Group is taking place in a region of vital importance to NATO’s regional security. The Atlantic Ocean is home to key maritime trade routes, critical energy infrastructure and undersea telecommunications cables.
Within this same framework of protection and surveillance of maritime areas, the submarine’s subsequent participation in Operation ‘Sea Guardian’ (OSG) complements this effort in the Mediterranean. The presence of the Navy’s most recently commissioned submarine is a clear demonstration of Spain’s commitment and solidarity in the fight against terrorism and in responding to shared threats.
Through its contribution to both missions, Spain reaffirms its role as a partner fully committed to European security and defence, establishing itself as one of the key players in maintaining international stability.
