  • The vessel has reinforced Spain’s commitment to the maritime security of the member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

The submarine ‘Galerna’ (S-71) — commanded by Lieutenant Commander Diego Varga Martínez de Quel — has docked in the port of Cádiz, thus concluding its participation in NATO’s maritime security operation ‘Noble Shield’. This was the ‘Galerna’s’ first time participating in this mission and the second time for a Spanish Navy submarine, following the deployment of the ‘Isaac Peral’ last February.

For a month, the Spanish submarine has carried out some of the Alliance’s main tasks: deterrence and the control of maritime traffic in Mediterranean waters, thereby fulfilling Spain’s commitment to NATO regarding stability and defence against any threat.

Following the port call, the crew of the ‘Galerna’ will set sail to take part in the Navy’s most important annual manoeuvres, FLOTEX, in the waters of the Bay of Cádiz. This participation concludes the deployment with a training cycle in a high-intensity environment, which is essential for maintaining a high level of readiness for this type of unit.

Operation ‘Noble Shield’

This maritime security operation forms part of the actions NATO maintains to prevent conflicts and guarantee the maritime security of its member countries. Its effectiveness lies in the constant presence of allied units ready to act swiftly and work in a coordinated manner across different nations.
