Over the coming month, the vessel will operate in the Mediterranean to reinforce Spain’s commitment to the Alliance’s collective security
The submarine ‘Galerna’ has set sail from its base at the Submarine Fleet in Cartagena (Murcia) to begin its first-ever integrated deployment as part of NATO’s maritime security operation ‘Noble Shield’.
For one month, the ‘Galerna’ will contribute to strengthening security and control of the maritime environment, demonstrating Spain’s firm commitment to maintaining her contribution to allied operations in the Mediterranean.
This is the ‘Galerna’s’ first participation in this operational theatre and the second for a Spanish submarine, following the deployment of the ‘Isaac Peral’ last March. With this milestone, Spain reaffirms its commitment to a key mission to guarantee freedom of navigation in strategic areas.
The vessel has a crew that follows a rigorous training programme to meet the challenges of sailing on a platform of this nature and to ensure the mission is carried out successfully.
Operation ‘Noble Shield’ forms part of NATO’s ongoing efforts to prevent conflicts and ensure the maritime security of its member countries. Her effectiveness lies in the constant presence of allied units ready to act swiftly and work in a coordinated manner across different nations.
