The submarine Galerna (S-71) has docked at the Cartagena Submarine Fleet after completing her deployment in NATO's Sea Guardian maritime security operation.
After more than 500 hours at sea in the Mediterranean, the Galerna has fulfilled her objectives in this mission: to increase knowledge of the maritime environment, to collaborate in eradicating the terrorist threat and to contribute to building regional maritime security capabilities.
Meanwhile, the submarine has ensured the Alliance's core tasks related to deterrence and collective defence, crisis management and cooperative security.
During her mission, the crew of the Garlerna, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Diego Varga Martínez, demonstrated their readiness in a highly demanding environment, ensuring the unit's operational readiness in all its capabilities.
OPERATION SEA GUARDIAN
Since 2017, Spain has maintained a constant presence in Operation Sea Guardian as a sign of its commitment to the fight against terrorism and maritime security, thereby contributing to stability and defence against common threats.
Sea Guardian is an Atlantic Alliance operation in the Mediterranean and currently covers a wide range of tasks assigned to Maritime Security Operations. More specifically, its activities are mainly focused on understanding the maritime environment: merchant traffic, lines of communication, fishing areas, the development of illegal activities, and promoting the maritime security capabilities of countries in the region.
