From its base in Cartagena, the submarine Galerna (S-71) has set sail to begin its deployment in the Mediterranean as part of NATO's maritime security operation Sea Guardian (OSG). This incorporation coincides with the end of the participation of the submarine ‘Isaac Peral’ in the same operation, thus ensuring the continuity of the Navy's participation in the mission, which is key to protecting and safeguarding the interests of the Alliance in the Mediterranean.
Over the coming weeks, the Galerna will contribute to strengthening knowledge of the maritime environment and supporting the fight against terrorism, key objectives of this mission, and other criminal activities at sea.
For this operation, the submarine has a crew specifically trained to operate Galerna-class submarines. This team follows a rigorous training program to meet the challenges of navigating such a specialized platform and ensure the mission is carried out successfully.
Operation Sea Guardian: Spain's presence
The participation of Spanish Navy units in Sea Guardian dates back to 2017, following the launch of the operation in late 2016. Since then, Spain has maintained a continuous presence of submarines integrated into the mission, contributing to stability and defense against common threats.
Sea Guardian is a flexible operation of the Atlantic Alliance in the Mediterranean and currently covers a wide variety of tasks assigned to Maritime Security Operations, such as: developing maritime security capabilities, supporting maritime situational awareness, and combating maritime terrorism.
In this context, each year, various operations are carried out focusing on specific areas of interest in the Mediterranean. These operations use maritime, air, submarine, and other assets to collect, develop, and maintain an accurate picture of daily activities in different areas of the Mediterranean Sea.
