March 7, 2025
  • Over the next few weeks, they will operate in Mediterranean waters as part of this NATO operation

The 'Canarias' frigate and the 'Galerna' submarine have joined NATO's Operation 'Sea Guardian' in Mediterranean waters. The 'Canarias' will be deployed until March 18, while the 'Galerna' will remain until March 23. Both ships from the Spanish Navy will operate in the Alboran Sea and the western Mediterranean. Their primary mission is to ensure maritime security.

OPERATION 'SEA GUARDIAN'

'Sea Guardian' is a flexible NATO operation covering a wide range of tasks related to Maritime Security Operations (MSO). These activities are mainly focused on improving situational awareness of the maritime environment (such as merchant traffic, communication lines, fishing areas, and illicit activities) and enhancing the maritime security capabilities of regional countries.

If necessary, the operation can include maritime interdiction tasks and the protection of critical infrastructure. Each year, several specific activations support Operation 'Sea Guardian' across different Mediterranean areas. This time, the 'Canarias' and the 'Galerna,' operating under NATO’s Maritime Command Headquarters in Northwood, UK, will focus on the western Mediterranean and the Alboran Sea, regions of particular interest to Spain.
