The frigate 'Navarra', commanded by frigate captain Álvaro Huelin Gan, is scheduled to stop at the port of Mahón tomorrow, Sunday 14 April. This is a logistical stopover as part of the Atlantic Alliance's Operation 'Sea Guardian' and under the national operational control of the Operations Command.
The 'Navarra' will be able to take benefit of the strategic geographical location of the Balearic island, and will dock at the Mahón Naval Station, a facility dedicated to providing support to those Navy vessels that require it.
It is not the first time that ships of its class have stopped in the Menorcan city. It is common for ships patrolling the Mediterranean to take advantage of the Mahón Naval Station's services, either to stock up on fuel and provisioning or to carry out repairs.
The 'Navarra' is carrying out one of the six specific Maritime Security Operations of the Atlantic Alliance, in this case the 'Sea Guardian', which are carried out every year in different parts of the Mediterranean. These operations are mainly aimed at knowledge of the maritime environment (merchant traffic, lines of communication, fishing areas, development of illicit activities, etc.), in the fight against terrorism from the sea, and enhancing the maritime security capabilities of the countries in the region..
In this case, the frigate 'Navarra', under operational command of NATO's Maritime Command Headquarters (in Northwood, UK) focuses its efforts on the western Mediterranean and the Alboran Sea, areas of interest to Spain.
