The frigate Santa Maria visits Algiers under NATO flag in operation Sea Guardian

For two days, the frigate 'Santa Maria' was docked in the port of Algiers. During its stay, it carried out different cooperation activities with the Algerian Navy, including Spanish protocol acts.

The call in Algiers was organized within the framework of NATO's operation SEA GUARDIAN, which main mission is the fight and dissuasion of terrorism, as well as the prevention of the different threats that could exist in the international waters of the Mediterranean and the area of the Strait of Gibraltar.  Within this context, and in order to optimize the results of the operation, joint actions are carried out with coastal navies to increase relations and exchange knowledge on illegal or suspicious activities in the Western Mediterranean.

The crew of the "Santa María" has participated in different encounters and activities to facilitate cooperation with Algeria, as well as national protocol acts such as the visit on board of the Spanish Ambassador in Algiers or visits of a large number of representatives of the Spanish community living in Algeria.

The activities carried out by the Spanish frigate "Santa Maria" took place in an atmosphere of cordiality and mutual benefit, including a communications and training exercise with the Algerian vessel "Moundjdid", which will allow the Alliance to optimize and contribute in a combined way to increase maritime security in the Mediterranean.
