Spain's military healthcare system, an essential link in the operational chain of the Multinational Brigade in Slovakia

  •  Healthcare ensures the safety, wellbeing and operational readiness of the forces deployed on this Alliance mission.

The military medical service within the Multinational Brigade Task Force Slovakia (MN BDE TF SVK) is an essential operational capability that ensures the safety, well-being and full readiness of the military personnel deployed in Slovakia. It directly contributes to the protection of the Force and to the overall success of the operation to protect the Alliance's eastern flank.

During its deployment at the Lest Training Area, the Spanish contingent is organised into different and distinct areas. This conditions the planning and execution of medical support. Despite the distances involved, this service is designed to ensure permanent medical coverage, both at the bases and during the numerous instruction and training activities.

In this operation, Spanish military healthcare is structured around two complementary elements: ROLE 1 (Role of Care), as part of the contingent's logistical structure, and the First Aid Post, which is integrated into the Tactical Group. Both constitute the fundamental structure of the deployed healthcare system and ensure an effective response to any healthcare incident.

The main task of military healthcare is to provide continuous, immediate and effective healthcare. It is capable of responding to situations ranging from primary care to the management of life-threatening emergencies. This structured and permanently operational system guarantees initial medical care, patient stabilisation and continuity of care, when necessary.

ROLE 1, under the command of Commander Cristina María Pastor Ochoa, acts as the core of the operation's medical support, working continuously and coordinating, when necessary, medical evacuations to higher-level hospitals. Complementarily, the military medical service integrated into the Headquarters, through the Medical Operations (MEDOP) area, plays a key role in providing medical advice to the command, monitoring the medical situation of the contingent and coordinating with the host nation.

The healthcare system deployed is designed to be comprehensive, with different specialities working in a coordinated manner. In the words of Commander Pastor ‘We work every day, to care for those who carry out the mission, looking after their wellbeing and providing an immediate and professional response to any incident.’ At the same time, the prevention of health risks associated with the operating environment is being stepped up.

This healthcare structure ensures effective, phased and ongoing assistance. It has become an essential part of the MN BDE TF SVK's operational chain, as well as a guarantee of safety for all deployed military personnel.

Spanish participation in Slovakia

On 20 January 2024, the Spanish Armed Forces began the gradual deployment of personnel and capabilities in Slovakia. Spain is currently leading the formation of the NATO Multinational Brigade and maintains a task force permanently deployed in the town of Lest.

Spanish forces began their deployment on the ground during the first half of 2024. Since then, they have contributed to the capabilities required by the Alliance. Eventually, on 1 July 2024, the Spanish Armed Forces assumed command of the Alliance's multinational Task Force in this eastern flank country, relieving the Czech Republic.

The capabilities of the Task Force, led by Spain, are complemented by units from Slovakia, Slovenia, Portugal and the Czech Republic. This deployment of forces, which supports and reinforces NATO's forward presence on its eastern flank, demonstrates Spain's firm commitment to its allies and the decisive contribution of the Spanish Armed Forces to the Alliance's deterrence efforts in Eastern Europe.
