The Multinational Brigade 'Latvia' officially begins its operations

- The transition from Battle Group to Brigade is formalised at a military parade at the Adazi base.
The Battle Group 'Latvia', in which the Spanish contingent is integrated, has officially started its journey as a Multinational Brigade in a military parade held at the military base of Adazi (Latvia). This step reinforces the idea of mutual defence, demonstrating once again the interoperability and solidarity of the members of the Alliance.
Canadian Colonel Céderic Aspirault takes command of the MNB-LVA Multinational Brigade. The deputy commander is Lieutenant Colonel Juan Antonio González Vergara, current commander of the Spanish eFP XV contingent.
The ceremony was presided over by General Jette Albinus, head of the Multinational Division North, belonging to the Danish Army, who in her speech highlighted the importance of the mission entrusted to Colonel Aspirault and the challenges facing the multinational brigade.
Also in attendance were various civilian and military authorities, including the Latvian Minister of Defence, Andris Sprūds, and the head of the Latvian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Leonīds Kalniņš, as well as the Canadian and Spanish ambassadors to Latvia.
The Brigade is composed of military personnel from thirteen nations with a multinational force of over three and a half thousand military personnel ready to fulfil the assigned mission.
Canada, as the brigade's host nation, is the largest contributor of personnel. In second place will be Denmark and Sweden, which will alternate a mechanised battalion with three months of presence each per year. And in third place is Spain, with a force of more than 330 military personnel.
The Brigade will have a multinational mechanised and armoured tactical group, which includes the tactical sub-group and the Spanish engineer unit; the Swedish and Danish battalion, a Canadian battalion, a fire group -in which the Spanish self-propelled battery is integrated-, combat logistics support units and the Headquarters, to which Spain also contributes personnel.
The importance of Spain's contribution is clear, as it provides personnel in all decision-making and planning bodies, demonstrating the readiness of our Armed Forces and their commitment to our allies.
