The presence of Spanish troops has ensured that aid reaches the towns of Kawkaba, Maryayoun and Kleyaa safely
Spanish soldiers from the 44th Lebanon Brigade, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), have escorted a humanitarian aid convoy in the south of the country.
The presence of Spanish troops ensured the safety of the convoy, which travelled through the towns of Kawkaba, Maryayún and Kleyaa, facilitating contact with the local population and helping to foster an atmosphere of trust in an area affected by the current conflict.
This activity demonstrates UNIFIL’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the population. Spain in Lebanon is strengthening the protection of the civilian population and supporting humanitarian initiatives.
The Spanish contingent continues to fulfil its mission, which includes ensuring access to Lebanese civilian populations, whilst adhering to the security protocols dictated by the regulations in this situation.
Spain in UNIFIL
The Spanish Armed Forces were deployed to Lebanon in September 2006. The bulk of the Spanish contingent is stationed at the ‘Miguel de Cervantes’ base, near the town of Maryayoun, where the headquarters of UNIFIL’s Eastern Sector—led by Spain—is located. There are also Spanish troops at the mission’s headquarters in Naqoura.
Currently, some 650 Spanish military personnel are deployed with UNIFIL, with the aim of ensuring compliance with United Nations Resolution 1701.
Spain’s participation in the United Nations mission in Lebanon has, over the years, become a firm demonstration of its commitment to peace, security and the well-being of the region. In addition to its military duties, the Spanish contingent has carried out numerous civil-military cooperation initiatives, strengthening ties with the local population.
