  •  At the Miguel de Cervantes base, General Bernal welcomed a group of local journalists.

With the aim of strengthening transparency and closer collaboration with the media, General Antonio Bernal, head of UNIFIL's Eastern Sector and the Lebanon XLIV Brigade (BRILIB) , held a meeting with journalists and local opinion leaders at the Miguel de Cervantes Base in Marjayoun.

The main objective of this meeting was to strengthen knowledge and commitment to the regional press, as well as to encourage open communication about the activities carried out by United Nations troops in the Eastern Sector of the UNIFIL mission.

During this meeting, General Bernal addressed the current situation in the area of responsibility and highlighted ‘the importance of the Lebanese population being aware of the mission's efforts to maintain peace and stability; and your communication work is fundamental to this purpose’.

General Bernal also encouraged the media to disseminate information about UNIFIL's daily work, emphasising that «as in any other part of the world, cooperation and relations with the press are essential for conveying accurate information and fostering trust between the community and the forces deployed».

The visiting press personnel expressed their gratitude for the welcome and conveyed their wishes for peace in the region. In this context, UNIFIL reiterates its willingness to collaborate with local media and continue building bridges of understanding that contribute to the well-being and security of the population in southern Lebanon.

Spain in UNIFIL

Spain has been part of the United Nations mission in Lebanon since September 2006, consolidating a solid commitment to peace and stability in the region over time. The Spanish contingent is mainly based in Miguel de Cervantes, in Marjayoun, where the Eastern Sector Headquarters, under Spanish leadership, is located, and also has a presence at UNIFIL Headquarters in Naqoura.

At present, around 650 Spanish military personnel are working to ensure the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, in a complex scenario marked by instability, despite the peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

In addition to its operational functions, Spain promotes various civil-military cooperation actions, which have strengthened ties with the local population and contributed to the well-being of communities in southern Lebanon. This work reflects Spain's commitment not only to security, but also to development and mutual trust.
