The sappers unit of the Spanish contingent deployed in Lebanon participated in the reconnaissance of the Blue Barrels located on the Blue Line, the demarcation line between Lebanese and Israeli territory. The objective was to identify improvements that may be necessary to implement the maintenance campaign for these elements.
The Blue Line, which stretches 120 km, is a reference line defined by the United Nations in 2000 for the purpose of verifying the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. Visible markers along this line are the Blue Barrels, structures whose history dates back to 2007, when the project for their installation was initiated. Thanks to them, both the civilian population and the troops deployed in the area clearly identify the line, thus avoiding unintentional crossings that could lead to an escalation of tension between the parties.
With this type of activity, the Spanish contingent is demonstrating its efforts to help stabilise the area, as well as its commitment to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
