  • The Spanish ambassador to Lebanon, accompanied by the chief general of the BRILIB, the unit chiefs of the BRILIB, as well as Lebanese representatives, both civilian and military, attended the ceremony held where the monolith erected in honour of the fallen is located.

At the site of the terrorist attack, a moving ceremony was held this morning to remember the six fallen paratroopers who died on 24 June 2007.

The ceremony was attended by the Spanish Ambassador to Lebanon, Jesús Ignacio Santos Aguado, who presided over the ceremony, accompanied by the General Chief of BRILIB XXXIX Luis Jesús Fernández Herrero and the Brigade Unit Commanders. Lebanese representatives, both civilian and military, were also present.

The formation was composed of an honours picket, with the participation of Lebanese Army personnel, BRILIB XXXIX-flag, flag of the Protected Light Tactical Group, as well as the contingent's War Band.

The central and most emotional moment, the tribute to the Fallen, consisted of the reading of a sonnet, followed by the singing of "Death is not the End" and the offering of two wreaths on the monolith, deposited by the Ambassador and the Commanding General of BRILIB, after which the Parachute Prayer was recited. The ceremony ended with the Parachute Shouts and the article from the Parachute Ideology "Life and Death".

It is a fact that the Generating Base Unit of the current contingent is the "Almogávares" VI Parachute Brigade, the same to which the Fallen belonged, which added even more emotion to the tribute.

Parachute Legionnaire soldiers Juan Carlos Villoria Díaz, Jonathan Galea García, Yeison Alejandro Castaño Abadía, Jeferson Vargas Moya, Yhon Edisson Posada Valencia and Manuel David Portas Ruiz were serving in the GTLP of the BRILIB II contingent when their BMR was the target of a terrorist car bomb attack while travelling between UNP 9-15 and the "Miguel de Cervantes" Base in Marjayoun.
