The Joint Cyberspace Command (MCCE in Spanish) participated for the first time in the IEEE Military Communications Conference, an event that brought together almost a thousand representatives from the public sector, notably the Defence sector, as well as from the private sector, industry and academia. This initiative took place in Washington, D.C., where innovative research and cutting-edge technology development were discussed.
Specifically, the MCCE, led by Major Jaime Calvo Tiemblo, participated in the panel titled ‘Tactical Operations and Challenges in NATO Theater’, alongside representatives of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE), and the companies Ericsson and CACI.
The panel shared the benefits and challenges for allies of operating through existing communications infrastructures in a host nation, complemented by deployable tactical assets. The importance of adapting 5G and future 6G technologies to military requirements was highlighted, as well as the need to understand and prevent risks, particularly those related to cybersecurity.
Spain's leadership in adapting these technologies to military use cases has been highlighted, thanks to the close collaboration between industry, academia and the Armed Forces.
Additionally, Major Calvo attended keynotes, workshops and tutorials of great interest. It is worth mentioning the conversations with Tom Rondeau, Head of the ‘FutureG’ programme of the US Department of Defence (Pentagon), as a continuation of Dr. Rondeau's visit to Spain to understand first-hand the functioning of the 5G bubble used in the Spanish Armed Forces.
