The Defence Staff remembers the victims of the ETA attack in López de Hoyos 32 years ago

• Six military personnel and one civil servant serving at the EMAD headquarters were killed in this terrorist act on 21 June 1993

The EMAD Headquarters today remembered the victims of the terrorist attack perpetrated by the terrorist group ETA on 21 June 1993 at the López de Hoyos roundabout in Madrid. The attack killed 6 military personnel and one civil servant who worked at the EMAD Headquarters.

The deceased were:

•  Javier Baró Díaz de Figueroa, lieutenant colonel in the Army
•  José Manuel Calvo Alonso, sergeant 1 in the Navy
•  José Alberto Carretero Sogel, lieutenant colonel in the Air Force.
• Fidel Dávila Garijo, lieutenant colonel in the Army
• Domingo Olivo Esparza, frigate captain in the Navy
• Pedro Robles López, civil servant in the Ministry of Defence
• Juan Romero Álvarez, lieutenant colonel in the Air Force.

The attack occurred just after 8:00 a.m. when a car bomb exploded as a military minibus was passing by on its way to EMAD. In addition to the seven fatalities, 29 other people were injured.

Today, relatives of the deceased attended a mass at the EMAD Headquarters, where they were accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral General Teodoro E. López Calderón and other military representatives of the EMAD.

Flowers were also laid in front of the plaque honouring them in the entrance hall of the General Headquarters of the Defence Staff.
