- Issues of common interest in the defence field were discussed, the future of the Enhanced Military Co-operation Initiative was addressed.
The sixteenth meeting of the Chiefs of Defence of the ‘5+5 Defence Initiative’ was held today in Segovia under the chairmanship of the Spanish Chief of Defence, Admiral Teodoro E. López Calderón.
The meeting was attended by high-ranking military representatives from all the countries that make up this working group. In this framework, the countries on both shores of the Mediterranean had the opportunity to discuss matters of common interest in the field of defence, address the future of the Initiative and improve military cooperation.
During the meeting, the participants monitored and took stock of the military cooperation activities foreseen in the Action Plan for this year. They also initiated coordination procedures for the 2025 Action Plan and supervised the activities of the academic bodies that make up the Initiative, such as the 5+5 Defence College and the Euro-Maghreb Centre for Research and Strategic Studies (CEMRES).
The ‘5+5 Defence Initiative’, founded in 2004, aims to serve as a meeting point for the exchange of knowledge and experiences between member countries in the field of security and defence, in which Spain plays a prominent role, thanks to the commitment shown by leading a large part of the activities being carried out.
Along with Spain, the ‘5+5 Defence Initiative’ includes Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal and Tunisia.
